Abstract

In August 2019 the city of Surakarta experienced a deflation of 0.16 percent with a Consumer Price Index of 132.18. This deflation is caused by a decrease in prices as indicated by the decline in the consumer price index figures. The expenditure groups that experienced a price index decline were: the foodstuffs group fell 0.79 percent and the transportation, communication and financial services group fell 1.49 percent. Conversely the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group rose 0.54 percent, the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group rose 0.12 percent, the clothing group rose 0.47 percent, the health group rose 0.02 percent and the group education, recreation and sports rose 0.89 percent.
The calendar year inflation rate (January - August) 2019 is 2.23 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (August 2019 to August 2018) is 3.09 percent.
Of the 6 cities in Central Java Province whose inflation figures were calculated, in August 2019 there were 4 cities experiencing inflation. The highest inflation occurred in Kudus by 0.82 percent, followed by Semarang by 0.47 percent, Purwokerto by 0.42 percent and Cilacap by 0.33 percent. Instead the city of Surakarta experienced deflation of 0.16 percent and the city of Tegal 0.02 percent.
Out of 82 national CPI cities, 44 cities experienced inflation and 38 cities experienced deflation. The city experiencing the highest inflation was Kudus by 0.82 percent and the lowest inflation occurred in Tasikmalaya city, Madiun city and Pare-Pare city respectively by 0.04 percent. On the contrary, the biggest deflation occurred in Bau-Bau city, amounting to 2.10 percent and the smallest deflation occurred in Tegal and Palopo each by 0.02 percent.
