Abstract

In May 2020 the city of Surakarta experienced a deflation of 0.20 percent with the Consumer Price Index of 103.52. This deflation is caused by a decrease in prices as indicated by the decline in the consumer price index figures. The expenditure groups that experienced a price index decline were: the food, beverage and tobacco group fell 1.11 percent and the housing, water, electricity and household fuel group dropped 0.03 percent. In contrast, the clothing and footwear group rose 0.18 percent, the household equipment, equipment and routine maintenance group rose 0.09 percent, the health group rose 0.27 percent, the transportation group rose 0.24 percent, the information, communication and financial services group up 0.02 percent, the recreation, sports and culture group up 0.12 percent and the personal care and other services group up 0.16 percent. While the education group and the food and beverage / restaurant supply group did not experience changes in the price index.
The calendar year inflation rate (January - May) 2020 is 0.32 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (May 2020 against May 2019) is 1.37 percent.
Of the 6 cities in Central Java Province whose inflation figures were calculated, in May 2020 there were 4 cities experiencing inflation and 2 cities experiencing deflation. The highest inflation occurred in the city of Cilacap by 0.29 percent, followed by the city of Purwokerto by 0.19 percent, the city of Kudus and the city of Semarang each by 0.10 percent. On the contrary deflation occurred in the city of Surakarta by 0.20 percent and the city of Tegal 0.10 percent.
Out of 90 national CPI cities, 67 cities experienced inflation and 23 cities experienced deflation. The city experiencing the highest inflation was Tanjung Pandan by 1.20 percent and the lowest inflation occurred in Tanjung Pinang, Bogor and Madiun by 0.01 percent respectively. In contrast, the biggest deflation occurred in Luwuk city, which was 0.39 percent and the smallest deflation occurred in the city of Manado, which was 0.01 percent.
